Un operativo americano senza nome, che lavora con la CIA, partecipa a un'azione in Ucraina, durante un attentato terroristico in un teatro dell'opera. Scoprirà che questa operazione era anche un test per mettere alla prova non solo la sua fedeltà all'Agenzia, ma pure la sua propensione a rischiare la vita per salvare persone innocenti. Viene così introdotto in un programma misterioso e compartimentalizzato, dove i partecipanti sanno solo quello che devono sapere. Lo addestrano quindi ad affrontare agenti che si muovono nel tempo e hanno pallottole che sparano a ritroso - ossia rientrano nella pistola - senza però spiegargli quale sia il loro obiettivo, ma solo che dall'esito delle sue operazioni dipende la sopravvivenza del mondo intero.
